How do I know if I need to make an appointment?

If you are researching counselors, you probably would benefit from making an appointment. There is something that motivated you to look for help. Whether it’s relationship issues, feeling overwhelmed by day to day life, struggling to cope with difficult current or past circumstances, counseling can help.  People turn to counseling for a variety of reasons. If you are ready to make a change or progress in life in any way, counseling can definitely be a valuable resource for you. You can also check out the blogpost  on my blog “Why do I need counseling? I mean….I’m fine…” to get a little more insight if this is a time where counseling can benefit you.

What kind of people can you help?

I specialize in blended family/step family dynamics, relationship issues, couples counseling, and those who feel “stuck” in life and want to achieve more satisfaction and peace in life.  Typically, my client is motivated, has a full and busy life but has come up against some issues in life that they feel are keeping them from performing at their best or living life to its fullest. The most important factor in clients that I see is that they are motivated to change. Counseling can be hard work for a client because it requires talking about things and thinking about things that are often hidden or that people try very hard not to talk about and think about. While it is hard work, the rewards can be enormous, and the subsequent positive effects life-changing.

Why does this web-based counseling cost the same as other in-person counselors I’ve seen? Shouldn’t it be cheaper?

What my clients are paying for is expertise, training, convenience and confidentiality. You are paying for what you actually get:  life-transforming therapy on your turf at your convenience.  For my clients, many may have 50 minutes a week for a therapy appointment, but they do not have 50 minutes + 30 minute drive each way, +parking, +waiting, so they don’t ever get the help they truly want. My personal goal and the mission of Journey Clinical Services is to make counseling accessible to those who are very busy and put a high premium on their time. Be assured that all regulations, education requirements, licensing standards are all the same for in-person and telehealth.

When are you available? Are you available for night and weekend appointments?

The primary mission of Journey Clinical Services is to make counseling accessible and convenient to those who are  seeking to make positive changes in their life. I am available by appointment and you can schedule by reaching out to me via the contact form on this page. In crisis situations, all clients agree to seek help at local emergency department or calling the National Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255, as I do not provide emergency on-call service.

Do you accept health insurance?

No, however I can accept Health Savings Accounts and Flex Spending Accounts (in form of Visa or Mastercard) for payment however, so you are welcome to use those funds to pay me. You may also ask your insurance company for reimbursement if you so desire and I am willing to provide paperwork that you need to complete that.

What forms of payment do you take?

All payment is due the evening of your session.  Prior to your session when you complete intake paperwork, you also put a credit card on file that will be billed automatically around midnight following your session. Acceptable credit cards are Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover and this can also include your Health Savings Account/Flex-Spending Account major credit card.

What’s your cancellation policy?

I require 24 hours’ notice to cancel an appointment with no charge. Appointments not cancelled within this time frame are subject to charge of full session cost. Of course situations beyond our control happen, and this will be taken into account. This policy is in place to reduce habitual no-show to appointments, not designed to be punitive to someone who has an uncontrollable event occur before their appointment.

What should I expect from my first appointment?

The first appointment is usually a full 60 minute appointment to give a little extra time on top of the regular session time to ensure "housekeeping" things are all in place. We will talk about what brought you counseling and ensure that it is something I am qualified in that area to help you. We will ensure you are comfortable with the technology aspect of counseling, which is extremely user friendly. Hopefully, the intake (initial information) forms will already be completed, so we will spend some time reviewing that. By the first session, you’ll get a good feel for if you feel comfortable working with me. A good counselor knows that there are some issues they are not qualified or competent to effectively provide treatment for. If those issues come up during the session, we will discuss and a referral to another counselor who is qualified to treat that issue.

I’m kind of nervous, what should I expect in general from counseling?

Being nervous is totally normal and it’s actually a good sign. You have come to the point where you are ready to make a change of some sort and anytime we are embarking on a new path, it feels uncomfortable. If you’ve never been in therapy let me assure you of a few things:

  • It is 100% confidential. Everything you tell me will stay between you and me. Only in the cases where there is imminent danger to you or someone else am I required by law and ethical standards to take other action that would involve others.
  • I view myself as someone who has training and experience to help you, but YOU are the expert on YOU. I believe that within each of us lie the answers we are seeking and need for healing and peace, and it is a therapist’s work to help you uncover them. I will also teach you new skills or introduce new ways of thinking that will help with your circumstances.
  • Therapy done well is rewarding, but also at times, difficult work. Sometimes we go through life avoiding emotions because that’s easier than dealing with things. In therapy, it’s my goal to help you be able to really dig into some emotions that are difficult to talk or think about, but we will do it at your pace in a safe and supportive manner.
  • Therapy is your goals and at your pace. I will ask questions and encourage you to consider some things differently, but ultimately, we work on what is important to you.

Any other questions/concerns, I am happy to talk with you about. You can use the contact form on the website or call 205-905-7935.
